Above-Net has added a check reader option to its Top100P Windows CE-based handheld computer terminal. The fully integrated option allows CMC-7 coding to be read by simply sliding the check by hand through a slot in much the same way that a credit card is swiped, according to the company.

"Although it may seem that cards have replaced checks, there are many places in the World where check usage is still high," said Above-Net executive VP Antonio Lannes. "In fact, even in the U.S. over 11 percent of all transactions in 2005 used checks, according to a report from the ABA, (American Banking Association)." Lannes also cited a recent report from Global Concepts projecting that, even though check writing is declining, there will still be 26 billion written in 2009.

The check reader works with the ECMA and ISO STD 1004-1977 CMC-7 code standards with a maximum of 50 characters. Processing time is less than 20ms with a rejection ratio lower than 0.5 percent, according to Above-Net. The device incorporates audible and visual indicators to signify correct reading or an error. The company expects to have a version for the MICR E13-B available in the third quarter of 2006.

"Our customers have continuously asked for this added capability," continued Lannes. "Applications such as service people visiting households and needing to complete the charging process can now offer all types of payment methods all fully secured by on-line authorization via the units wireless CDMA/1xRTT or GSM/GPRS capability."
