Box PC has Atom, optional PCI slot

Datasound Laboratories has announced a pair of fanless box PCs employing 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processors. The ACS-2663 and ACS-2664 include hard disk and CompactFlash storage, dual gigabit Ethernet ports, plus both VGA and DVI video outputs, the company says.

Like many other box PCs, the ACS-2663 and ACS-2664 are designed to run fanlessly, thanks to integral heat sinks, and may be either parked on a desk or wall-mounted. The only difference between the ACS-2663 (below left) and ACS-2664 (below right), apart from size, is that the latter includes a 32-bit, 33MHz PCI expansion slot.

Both PCs have adopted the wildly popular Intel Atom N270 processor, along with the chipmaker's typical 945GSE northbridge and ICH7M southbridge. Like other such designs, they offer up to 2GB of DDR2 memory, in this case via a single SODIMM socket, says Datasound.

According to Datasound, the ACS-2663 and ACS-2664 support solid-state installation of embedded operating systems via their front-accessible CompactFlash slots. Alternatively, the devices both support SATA and have room for internal, 2.5-inch hard disk drives, the company says.

The ACS-2883 and ACS-2664 both have dual gigabit Ethernet ports and dual video outputs (VGA and DVI-D), says Datasound. Both also support four USB ports on the rear, two additional USB ports (optional) on the front, dual COM ports (1 RS232/422/485, one RS232), and optional SPP/EPP/ECP parallel ports, the company adds.

Features and specifications listed by Datasound Laboratories for the ACS-2663 and ACS-2664 include the following:

        • Processor -- Intel Atom N270 clocked at 1.6GHz
        • Memory -- Up to 2GB DDR2 RAM via single SODIMM slot
        • Storage -- CompactFlash slot and room for 2.5-inch SATA hard disk drive
        • Networking -- 2 x gigabit Ethernet (RJ45 connectors)
        • Other I/O:
          • 1 x VGA
          • 1 x DVI-D
          • 4 x USB 2.0 (rear), 2 x USB 2.0 (front; optional)
          • 1 x RS232, 1 x RS232/422/485
          • Audio -- line in, line out, mic in
          • 1 x SPP/EPP/ECP parallel port (optional)
        • Expansion:
          • 1 x 32-bit PCI (ACS-2664 only)
          • 1 x CompactFlash

        • Operating temperature -- 32 to 122 deg. F (0 to 50 deg. C)
        • Dimensions:
          • ACS-2663 -- 8.85 x 8 x 3.13 inches (225 x 203.2 x 79.7mm)
          • ACS-2664 -- 8.91 x 8 x 4.06 (226.5 x 203.2 x 103.3mm)
        Further information

Datasound Laboratories did not specify operating system support for the ACS-2663 and ACS-2664, but given that the devices use standard chipsets with no unusual features, support for Windows Embedded and Linux operating systems is a safe assumption. Pricing was also not detailed, but the box PCs appear to be available now.
