Fujitsu Microelectronics America and 123ID have collaborated on a development kit that aims to simplify the addition of fingerprint authentication to existing Windows-based applications. The DFK-UMS kit includes a USB fingerprint sensor along with fingerprint-image capture software claimed to incorporate an "industry-leading...

The DFK-UMS kit supports systems running Windows XP, 2000, and Vista, and includes Capture, Verify, Identify, and Minutia Extraction Modules:
        • Capture -- The Capture module calibrates the included Fujitsu MBF200 USB fingerprint sensor and automatically adjusts the sensor sensitivity to create the optimal image.

        • Verify and Identify -- The Verify and Identify Modules, which are available in DLL, static libraries, and ActiveX form, perform interoperable matching with fingerprints captured on the MBF200 USB Touch Sensor, Fujitsu said.

        • Minutia Extraction -- The Minutia Extraction Module finds the endings of the ridges and bifurcations in a fingerprint, then generates minutiae compatible with FIPS-201 NIST specifications. This module also enables batch and massive creation of fingerprint templates for volume testing under 1-Many and Identify conditions.
According to the companies, the DFK-UMS provides extensive sensor-calibration routines to accurately image wet, dry, or damaged fingers. An executable version of a sample application demonstrates the enrollment, verification and identity management captured with the supplied MBF200 USB module. Sample source code and complete sample project application files for Visual C++, Visual C#, Visual Basic, and HTML are also included.

Philip Hopkins, biometrics product manager with Fujitsu Microelectronics America, stated, "Fingerprint sensor technology is delivering unprecedented levels of security in a wide range of platforms and applications. Our new software kits ... will help developers meet the fast-growing demand for biometric identification programs."

The DFK-UMS kit comes in four different versions, offering either standard or open licensing in either 1-1 (Verification) or 1-N (Identity) management configurations. Prices start at $3,000.
