Sybase subsidiary iAnywhere Solutions has released an upgrade to its device management and security software that supports Windows Mobile devices. Afaria 5.3 adds "significant" security features for handhelds and converged devices, improved patch management capabilities, and support for Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003, according to the company.

iAnywhere offers a suite of mobile applications that provide mobile device management, security, Internet, email, CRM, PIMs, enterprise data access and synchronization, and more. Afaria is the tool used to administer device software updates and patches, security, and asset management, among other functions.

Afaria's enhanced security management includes enhancements that "improve end-user acceptance and usability of security settings," iAnywhere says. By centrally defining, deploying, and maintaining security policies, administrators can strike a balance between security and usability to ensure that the burden of implementing security features is not placed on users, according to the company.

Support for Microsoft's Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 allows software packages created in SMS to be deployed on mobile devices directly from the SMS console. Applications can be deployed to devices running any of the supported operating systems, which currently include Windows Mobile, Symbian, RIM BlackBerry, and PalmOS. Additionally, a detailed inventory of hardware and software asset information from these devices can be maintained in the SMS inventory repository, iAnywhere says.

"Enterprise customers are starting to understand the value of using the computing power of converged devices to support business on the front lines," said iAnywhere VP of engineering Joe Owen. "At the same time, they're waking up to the fact that this technology demands the same level of management and security that's been dedicated to the corporate desktops and laptops."
