The unit can recognize "Group 1" explosives, such as TNT and TNB, and "Group 2" explosives, such as Semtex and nitroglycerin, the company said. The device is also capable of recognizing narcotics: Methamphetamine, LSD, cocaine, and THC, to name just a few.
DetectaChem says the Seeker utilizes a "very robust" liquid chemistry detection method (colorimetric assay) that is immune to common interfering agents and changes in climate. "Typically," according to the company, this "requires highly trained personnel with subjective results. The Seeker CDU 220 has completely automated this method into a quick, simple, and repeatable test."

Seeker CDU 220 in operationTo use the Seeker, an operator swipes a card on any article, surface, or subject under investigation. The card is then inserted into the Seeker, which displays test results on its color, daylight-visible screen within one or two minutes. Results are automatically stored in internal memory (amount not specified) along with the date and time of the test.

Data can be transferred to a PC via the Seeker's USB port, SD card, or optional Bluetooth. It can then be analyzed via DetectaChem's desktop utility software, which can output location data to a user's existing mapping software.
The USB port also enables firmware upgrades. DetectaChem says these will be available from the company's website, adding new features and more detection types.
According to a DetectaChem spokesperson, DetectaChem used
Adeneo's Windows CE 6.0 BSP (board support package) to develop the Seeker's embedded software. The device's user interface is based on DetectaChem's proprietary software.
Price of the CDU 220 was not disclosed. However, DetectaChem says it offers a 60-day money-back guarantee to any agency that wishes to evaluate the system.
