IRiver has introduced a new combination portable media player (PMP) and GPS device that features both a 7-inch LCD screen and an organic LED (OLED) display for showing menus. The iRiver NV runs Windows CE 5.0, with a custom GUI created in Adobe Flash Lite 2.1.

The NV device is said to incorporate SIRF's starIII GPS architecture. It also has a 1.3-megapixel camera, plus an integral receiver for T-DMB (terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting) television channels, such as Korea's KBS, SBS, and YTN.

The NV's unusual OLED display, located in the round control knob (shown below), is apparently utilized to display menus. When the device is in GPS mode, the OLED shows arrows to indicate when a turn should be made.

Like other recent devices from iRiver and Yukyung, among others, the NV features a user interface written using Adobe's Flash Lite. Flash Lite is said to permit custom GUI development with a RAM overhead as little as 450 Kbytes.

iRiver says the NV comes with 128 MB of DRAM, 256 MB of flash memory, and dual SD expansion slots. Optionally available are a variety of mounting brackets, plus a remote control.

The heart of the NV, according to iRiver, is a MagicEyes MMSP2+, a dual-core multimedia-oriented SoC (system-on-chip) that integrates ARM926EJ and ARM946E processors running at 390 and 300 MHz, respectively. The MMSP2+ chip also includes a video processor, graphics accelerator, camera processor, and numerous other functions (see diagram, below).
