Dual-mode GSM/VoWiFi rings up Windows Mobile handhelds

VIPN (Voice Internet Phone Network), a Swiss carrier specializing in dual-mode GSM WiFi phones, has announced what it claims is the world's first functional GSM/VoWiFi (voice over WiFi) transparent dual-mode software for Windows Mobile smartphones and Pocket PCs.

VIPN says that its "VIVA" software enables handheld devices running Windows Mobile 5.0 to seamlessly hand over connections from GSM to VoWiFi, and from VoWiFi back to GSM. This action is completely transparent and automatic, with no awareness on the user's part, according to the company. The application detects an available hotspot, connects to the SIP server, and automatically routes the call over VoIP.

VIVA users will be able to simultaneously receive calls under both their GSM number and "WoVoIP number" (a user-assigned VoWiFi phone number), according to VIPN.

VIPN says it will initially offer the VIVA software with the Axia 308 (shown above) and the Qtek 8310 smartphone.
