Advantech has squeezed Intel's embedded Core Duo processor technology onto an EPIC form-factor single-board computer (SBC). The "extra-rugged, industrial-grade" PCM-4390 also includes a full set of on-board PC-style functions and peripherals, along with an option for an on-board "disk-on-module" storage module.

The PCM-4390 employs the ubiquitous Intel 945GM GMCH/ICH7M chipset and Intel 945GM (Extreme Graphics 2) graphics. Additional features include dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, two SATA II ports, and eight USB 2.0 ports. While the 1.66 GHz Core Duo processor requires active cooling, Celeron M and 1.2 GHz Core Duo models are available for customers who need fanless operation.

The company claims the board's USB-based disk-on-module (USB-DOM) option -- supported by flash memory vendors such as PQI, Msystems, Transcend, and InnoDisk -- enables quicker boot-up and read/write performance than CompactFlash. USB-DOM devices can also be locked onto the SBC just 3 mm from the board itself, providing superior vibration tolerance, the company says.

        Other specifications include:
        • Processor -- Intel Core Duo (1.2 or 1.6 GHz) or Celeron M (1.06 GHz)
        • Memory -- 128MB to 1GB of 400/533/667 DDR2 RAM
        • Storage:
            1 x EIDE (UDMA 33) interface
          • onboard USB-DOM solid-state disk option
        • Video:
          • Intel 945GM controller sharing up to 64 MB of system memory
          • CRT display mode with resolution up to 1600 x 1200 at 85Hz and 2048 x 1536 at 75Hz
          • Dual-channel LVDS; supports up to UXGA panel resolution, with frequency range from 25 MHz to 112 MHz
        • Audio -- ICH7M AC97 3D surround stereo sound; supports line-in, line-out and mic-in via optional PCM-410 audio module
        • LAN -- dual 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports (based on BroadCom BCM5721)
        • Other I/O ports:
          • 1 x KB/mouse
          • 4 serial ports -- 3 x RS232; 1 x RS232/422/485
          • 1 x parallel printer port
          • 8 x USB 2.0
          • 8 x GPIO lines
        • Expansion:
        • PCI-104 interface
        • Dimensions -- 4.5 x 6.5 inches (115 x 165 mm)
        • Power -- ATX connector, (12 V optional for PC/104 add on card and LCD inverter
The PCM-4390 is available now and is compatible with Windows XP Embedded, according to the company. It is also compatible with Advantech's SUSI suite of APIs.
