Sharp has announced a Windows PMP (portable media player) that incorporates a QWERTY keyboard and extensive electronic dictionary capabilities. The "RD-PM10" features a sliding 4.3-inch touchscreen display, FM radio, voice recorder, microSD slot, and optional DMB (digital multimedia...

Sharp's new PMP runs Windows CE 5.0 on an ARM-based Texas Instruments TMS320DM6441 CPU, and includes an undisclosed amount of RAM, 8GB of flash storage, and a microSD expansion slot. The device also has two stereo speakers, an FM receiver, an optional DMB receiver, and the ability to play back audio and video in a variety of formats.

So far, that describes a wide variety of other Korean PMPs, but in this case the device's 4.3-inch screen, with a resolution of 480 x 272 pixels, slides up to reveal a miniaturized QWERTY keyboard (below). This allows the user to enter words and interact with the RD-PM10's multiple onboard dictionaries, which are said to include the Oxford Advanced Learner's Seventh Edition, Oxford Wordfinder, Oxford Dictionary of Quotations, American English Expressions, and many more.

The PMP may also be operated with a finger or stylus, and features directional navigation, ESC, OK, Menu, and Home keys around the edges of the screen. Unfortunately, however, the gadget includes neither a web browser nor any form of Internet connectivity.

Features and specifications released by Sharp for the RD-PM10 include the following:
        • Processor -- Texas Instruments TMS320DM6441
        • Memory -- RAM n/s, and 8GB of flash storage
        • Display -- 4.3-inch touchscreen with 480 x 272 pixel resolution
        • Keys -- Navigation, ESC, OK, Menu, and Home keys around edges of keyboard, plus QWERTY keyboard under sliding display

        • Other I/O -- USB port
        • Expansion -- microSD slot
        • Battery -- 3500mAh lithium-polymer battery
        • Operating temperature -- 32 to 104 deg. F (0 to 40 deg. C)
