Oregan says that its Media Browser software enables broadband IP delivery of digital entertainment content to resource-constrained consumer electronics devices. The browser has a 2 MB code footprint and requires 8 MB of system RAM. At the core of the package is a Web browser and UI engine module that complies with W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) recommendations and enables advanced web browsing and graphics rendering on TV-centric entertainment platforms, according to the company. The browser also integrates Oregan's "clean-room implementation" of Macromedia Flash and Document Object Model version 2.
Media Excel says its SoftStream technology supports a complete set of popular codecs -- including MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.263 and H.264 -- to deliver real-time software-only video decoding on a variety of embedded operating systems including Windows CE. SoftStream avoids the problems associated with hardware-based implementations, which increase device cost and prevent the target device from being upgraded to support emerging advanced media compression formats, according to the company.
The companies say they are currently developing their first reference platform, which will be based on an Intel IP Digital set-top box design.
