Equator showcases advanced IP STBs running CE .NET 4.2

Silicon vendor Equator Technologies showcased its BSP-15 multimedia processors in several video-centric applications including several new advanced IP set-top boxes (STBs), including some running Windows CE .NET 4.2 as their embedded OSes, at this week's International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Each of the IP STBs included support for multi-format video in MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and the new Windows Media 9 Series, Equator said. Other features demonstrated included DRM, Web browsing, digital program guide, and delivery of media-intensive services such as home videoconferencing.

According to Equator, the BSP-15 implements a proprietary VLIW/SIMD instruction set architecture optimized for video-intense applications. The BSP-15 operates at 40 GOPS (billion operations per second), and thus has sufficient performance to support "any codec at any time, enabling multi-format video on a single platform." Additionally, the ability to implement virtually any codec via software can enable OEMs to introduce new features sooner, differentiate products more readily, and extend product lifecycle through simple software upgrades. Supported codes include: Windows Media 9 Series (in standard definition and 720p high definition), H.264, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, RealVideo, DivX, H.263, H.263+, and VP6. The BSP-15 SoC integrates a host processor functionalities with media processing capabilities, SDRAM and PCI interfaces, a DES engine, and a multimedia I/O system.

Equator did not provide further details regarding the hardware architectures of the STBs running Windows CE, but it is presumed that Windows CE .NET runs on a second processor, since the BSP-15 is specialized for efficiently implementing multimedia protocols in software, in a DSP-like manner, and implement proprietary VLIW/SIMD processor architectures rather than those supported by Windows CE.
