Socket Communications has released an 802.11b/g module and associated development kits for device and equipment manufacturers. The module supports multiple expansion card interfaces such as SD and CF, and the development kits support both Windows CE and Windows Mobile, according to the company.

Socket says its newly implemented "fast roaming" algorithm enables WiFi based devices to seamlessly roam between access points in less than 200 milliseconds, resulting in uninterrupted VoIP calls and secure data connections while roaming within a closed WLAN environment.

Other key features of the 802.11b/g module, according to Socket, include:
        • Multiple interfaces -- CF, SDIO, SPI, HPI, EHPI
        • Enterprise-level security -- WPA-2, AES
        • Power save mode -- 8 to 10 hour operation for typical battery-powered devices
        • Supports Bluetooth - WLAN co-existence
        • Small size -- exact size not specified
The development kits include support for Windows CE 4.2 and 5.0, as well as Windows Mobile 2003, 2003SE, and 5.0. Additionally, support for other operating systems such as Linux, ThreadX, and VxWorks is available through the Socket OS development partner program, the company says.

        Availability

Samples of the 802.11b/g WLAN Module and development kits supporting either CF or SD interfaces will be available on Nov. 20, according to Socket. Pricing was not disclosed.
