Maxspeed Corp. unveiled what it characterizes as the first notebook-style wireless thin client device. The MaxBook 810 weighs in at just 2.9 lb., offers Ethernet, modem, 802.11b, and (optional) wide-area wireless connectivity, and is powered by Microsoft's Windows XP Embedded OS, the company said.
According to Maxspeed, the MaxBook 810's custom embedded firmware includes Internet Explorer, a Java Virtual Machine, terminal emulations, and support for both Citrix ICA and Microsoft RDP protocols, resulting in "full-feature, full-screen access to applications and data residing on mainframes, UNIX servers, Citrix MetaFrame servers, web servers, desktop PC's, and home PC's."
The MaxBook family, which will be offered with a choice of embedded OSes including XP Embedded, CE.NET, and Embedded Linux, is priced at around $1250 and will be available by mid-2003, Maxspeed said.
