ZaTelnet recently released a free SSH tunneling and port-forwarding program for Windows Mobile devices that support the .NET Compact Framework 2.0. "ZaTunnel" boasts facilities for secure remote administration of Unix and other servers via Telnet, FTP, or VNC using mobile devices, according to the company.

Tunneling, or port forwarding, is a way to forward otherwise insecure TCP traffic through the SSH Secure Shell, ZaTelnet explains. Tunneling can protect POP3, SMTP, Telnet, FTP, VNC, and HTTP connections that would otherwise be exposed to eavesdropping.

ZaTunnel is offered in two versions -- one for Pocket PCs, and the other for smartphones. The download page is here.

ZaTelnet also offers an eponymously named shareware Telnet/SSH client for devices supporting either .NET CF 1.0 or 2.0. ZaTelnet Professional (pictured on the right) supports a range of interface configuration options, such as font size, orientation, floating keyboard, and virtual scrolling, according to the company. It also includes a VT100 terminal emulator for working with Midnight Commander and other console-based programs running on a remote system.
