Illium Software is offering a free soft-keyboard application for UMPCs and Tablet PCs, based on a unique, sliding approach to text entry. InScribe 2007 lets users slide the stylus from letter to letter, a technique the company claims is "fast, natural, and easy to learn."

Inscribe also supports the more common "tap" mode of text entry, Illium says. It also features adjustable transparency, allowing other content to be visible through the keyboard. Additionally, a "ghost" option lets users "tap through" the keyboard to work with applications behind it, without having to move it out of the way.

The keyboard size is completely adjustable, and the key layout is fully customizable according to Illium. Several layouts are included with the package.

Inscribe was the first program Illium released, back in 1997, it says. The company is now re-introducing Inscribe in an "evolved version" for UMPCs and tablet PCs. In May, Illium claimed to be the first major PDA software vendor to support the new UMPC platform.

Last month, Inscribe was named "Best UMPC Software" at the Handango Summit. Inscribe 2007 is available for download, here.
