Barablu says its service offers free mobile-to-mobile VoIP calling over WiFi-enabled devices. In addition to voice calls, the service supports instant text messaging. Currently supported devices include the Windows Mobile-based iMate SP5 and SP5m, and the Symbian-based Nokia 9300i and 9500, and more handsets will be added later this year, according to the company.
A fee-based service is also available, which allows a land-line phone to reach a Barablu subscriber anywhere in the world, according to the company. Subscribers signing up for "MyNumber" can select a preferred area code for their phone number. Incoming calls to that number are forwarded to the subscriber's WiFi-enabled mobile device.
Barablu, based in London, describes itself as "the world's first free calls and text mobile-to-mobile community."
Barablu managing director Baskaran Allirajah, stated, "Consumers around the world are constantly looking for cheaper, even free, and easy-to-use services. We are meeting this demand by offering similar PC based IP services as Skype, but extending the service to WiFi enabled mobile phones as well. These are quad band phones, which can connect to either a conventional cellular service or a WiFi network."
