Fujitsu has announced a mobile order-taking terminal that runs Windows Embedded POS Ready 2009. The "Patio 700" includes an Intel Atom Z530P CPU, an 8GB SSD (solid state disk), 802.11a/b/g wireless networking, a "security key" option, and a 10.4-inch touchscreen display, the company says.

According to Fujitsu, the tablet-style Patio ("Portable Advanced Terminal for Information Organizations") 700 may be used either in a fixed location, with the aid of the stand shown at right, or by a employee roaming anywhere within a store. The device incorporates 802.11a/b/g wireless networking, plus a 4800mAh battery that is said to provide up to six hours of operation.

Fujitsu says the Patio 700 runs Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 on a 1.6GHz Atom Z530P, the latter a 22 x 22m version of the original Z530 that includes an integrated heat spreader. The device has 1GB of DDR2 memory and an 8GB SSD, according to the company.

The Patio 700 includes Internet Explorer 7.0, Windows Media Player 11, and Microsoft Office viewers, and is said to "easily run web applications required by customers." As noted, the device includes 802.11a/b/g wireless networking, and Bluetooth 2.1 is also part of the mix.

According to Fujitsu, the Patio 700 has a 10.4-inch touchscreen display that may be operated in either 1024 x 768 or 800 x 600 resolutions, depending on the application, plus a 10-key numeric keypad, a four-way controller, and four function keys. A built-in security mechanism is said to lock the device when its authorized user walks away, and to unlock it upon his or her return, though no information was provided on how this operates.

Fujitsu adds that the Patio 700 can survive 1.2-meter drops, and is IP54-rated for resistance to liquids. The device includes a serial port and two USB ports, and is ready to operate with optional, handheld barcode scanners, the company says.

Features and specifications listed by Fujitsu for the Patio 700 include the following:
