Fujitsu announced support for Microsoft's Windows XP Embedded (XPe) on its TeamPoS 2000 point-of-sale (POS) systems. Fujitsu calls the TeamPOS 2000 a "trim client," which provides high reliability by not including failure-prone mechanical devices such as fans and disk drives. built-in Flash memory is used for local storage of transaction data, offline price lookup files, and non-resettable totals, allowing operation to continue during a power outage, Fujitsu said.

The TeamPoS 2000 is based on a 566MHz Celeron processor equipped with up to 768MB SDRAM, and it provides interfaces for 10/100 Mbit Ethernet LAN, multiple USB, multiple serial, printer, PS/2 keyboard/mouse, RGB VGA display interface, and digital LCD display interface. Additionally, an optional 802.11b wireless LAN mini-PCI radio module can be added internally.

According to Fujitsu, XPe was selected for its reliability, enhanced security, and performance along with the latest multimedia, web browsing capabilities, and extensive device driver support. "While providing support for POS industry standards and legacy Windows applications, Windows XPe can be customized to include only the components needed by the retailer, eliminating unnecessary system overhead and costly memory," the company said.
