ESRI is bundling its mobile GIS (geographical information systems) and mapping software with a ruggedized, Windows CE powered handheld GPS receiver from Thales Navigation. The combination of ArcPad mobile GIS software and the MobileMapper CE GPS receiver creates a flexible system for GIS and mapping applications, according to ESRI.

ESRI says that together, the ArcPad software and the MobileMapper CE GPS provide field personnel with the ability to capture, analyze, and display geographic information, update enterprise data, and improve productivity and decision making in the field. ArcPad supports a multilayer environment with industry-standard vector map and raster image display that includes aerial photographs and satellite imagery, according to the company.

Navigation display and query tools include:
        • Variable zoom and pan.
        • Zoom to a specified layer or spatial bookmark.
        • Center on the current GPS position.
        • Measure distance, area, and bearings on a map.
        • Identify features by tapping on them.
        • Display additional information about features through a hyperlink.
        • Locate, label, and zoom to a feature.
The MobileMapper CE GPS handheld is based on an ARM920T processor equipped with 64MB SDRAM, and running Windows CE. According to Thales, it offers an "impressive array of high-performance features," including real-time, sub-meter GPS positioning, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, removable SD card memory, and an all-day removable battery.

The combination package is available to US customers only for $2,400, according to ESRI. An alternate package, priced at $3,250, adds ArcPad Application Builder, a desktop application for personalizing and customizing ArcPad to include custom input forms.
