        GPS handheld connects remotely

Trimble has announced two handheld GPS systems targeting municipal government utility mapping and other asset management applications. The Juno SB and SC both run Windows Mobile 6.1 on 533MHz processors, and boast 3.5-inch displays, three-megapixel cameras, WiFi, Bluetooth, "all-day" battery life,...

        and optional cellular data networking.

The Juno SC, otherwise identical to the SB, adds an integrated HSDPA cellular modem, said to operate using either quad-band GSM or tri-band WCDMA.

Trimble says the Juno SB and SC have a GPS chipset supporting both NMEA and SiRF protocols. Claimed accurate to two meters, the devices are compatible with SBAS (satellite-based augumentation systems) that include WAAS (wide area augmentation system) in the U.S., EGNOS (european geostationary navigation overlay system) in Europe, and MSAS (multi-functional satellite augmentation system) in Japan. SBAS networks comprise ground-based reference stations that measure small variations in GPS satellite signals, then send this correction data to geostationary satellites, from which it can be received by SBAS-enabled devices.

        Trimble's Nomad

Out of Trimble's range of GPS-enabled handhelds, the Juno SB and SC are the least rugged. Unlike the Nomad seen at right, for example, it can't survive dunkings in water, and isn't said to be dust-sealed. But the Junos are tough enough to withstand drops from 2.5 feet, the company says.

The Juno SB and SC are apparently replacements for the Juno ST announced last year. Despite having a very similar appearance, the new units have received a faster processor, more memory, longer battery life, different dimensions, a camera, and an operating system upgrade. For example, the Juno ST had a 300MHz Samsung S3C2442 processor, 64MB of RAM, and 128MB of flash storage. The Juno SB and SC have 533MHz Samsung S3C2443 CPUs, teamed with 128MB of RAM, 128MB of flash, and a microSD expansion slot. The Junos have grown slightly, too, now measuring 5.1 x 2.9 x 1.2 inches (129 x 74 x 30mm). A 2600mAH battery is claimed to operate the devices for eight hours, with GPS active, or 14 hours with GPS inactive.

In addition to its GPS receiver, the Juno devices includes 802.11b/g wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.0. Both devices sport a 3.5-inch touchscreen display with 320 x 240 resolution, plus a three megapixel camera with autofocus. The Juno SB and SC can take still photos in JPEG format, or shoot video in WMV format, Trimble says.

Lastly, the Juno SB and ST now run Windows Mobile 6.1, supplied here with Microsoft's Office Mobile applications, Adobe Reader, and Transcriber handwriting recognition software. Optional software listed by Trimble includes the company's TerraSync software, extensions for ESRI's ArcPad and ArcGIS software, and GPS Pathfinder office software. Additionally, an available SDK (software development kit) and GPS Controller software are claimed useful for "controlling NMEA output and in-field mission planning."
