Get a $5500 Windows phone while they last

Some people might mock the notion of a $5500 Windows Mobile phone, launched amidst a global recession. But we prefer to chill out, envisioning the eight women who will buy Gresso's limited-edition "Lady Diamond," with gold, diamond-encrusted keys and a sapphire glass window on its backside.

Unlike a watch, of course, Gresso's new phone has no moving parts. Nonetheless, as it did with last year's Skeleton model, Gresso has fitted the limited-edition Lady Diamond with a rear window (right), said to use the type of sapphire crystal glass used in high-end watches, that provides a view of the device's circuitry.

The case of the Lady Diamond -- "an ode to femininity, to elegance, and to beauty" -- is made of titanium alloy, protected by a special ceramic coating, according to the company. Meanwhile, the device features keys made of gold, a directional keypad crowned with four white diamonds, plus a battery cover that is said to have a patented magnetic lock and to be decorated in leather.

In another "innovation by Gresso," the Lady Diamond's keys are said to be labeled via Roman numerals. This particular detail isn't claimed to be a first, since Roman numerals were also used on the company's previous creations, including both the Skeleton and the Luna Steel (left) released in April 2008.

As to the Lady Diamond's innards, they more closely resemble other Windows Mobile smartphones selling for as little as $100. The device runs Windows Mobile 6.0 -- what, no 6.1 upgrade for milady? -- on an unspecified processor, provided with 64MB of RAM and 2GB of flash storage. Meanwhile, the screen, whose size is not specified, has QVGA (320 x 240) resolution.

Telephony is tri-band (900/1800/1900MHz) GSM, and the device also includes Bluetooth 1.2 and two megapixel cameras. The Lady Diamond can entertain its owner with MIDI, WMA, WAV, AVI, ASF, and WMV files via Windows Media Player, says Gresso.

Technical features and specifications provided by Gresso for the Lady Diamond include:
