Getting to know Windows XP Embedded's HORM

HORM doesn't stand for "Ham On Rye (with) Mayonnaise," according to Windows XP Embedded developer Mike Moini. Rather, it's an acronym for "Hibernate Once, Resume Many," one of the embedded-enabling features in Windows XPe. In this whitepaper, Moini reviews the basics of HORM, and what's new in Feature Pack 2007.

HORM is a mechanism for quickly rebooting the same XPe image any number of times, according to Moini. In this respect, it is fundamentally different from hibernation as used in laptops, where the hibernated image doesn't persist across reboots.

Moini notes that the process of activating and deactivating HORM has been simplified in Feature Pack 2007. Finally, he offers some sample code that shows how to use the HORM APIs.
