Convertible netbook has discrete graphics, too

Gigabyte announced a 11.6-inch notebook that converts into a tablet, includes dual-core processors, and is available with discrete graphics. The T1125 has a capacitive touchscreen, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, up to 8GB of RAM and a 500GB hard disk drive, an eSATA port, and a USB 3.0 option, the company says.

Long before the current tablet craze, Gigabyte was creating notebooks and netbooks whose screen flipped around into a tablet configuration. For example, its M912 (right) was released in 2008 with an 8.9-inch screen, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, and a 160GB hard disk drive.

        A 2009 successor, the T1028X/G, sported a 10.1-inch screen with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution plus a slightly more powerful, 1.66GHz Atom N280. And this year's T1005M stepped up to Intel's dual-core Atom N550.

The new T1125 transcends these earlier devices in power, if not in size, by providing either a dual-core, 1.2GHz Pentium U5400, a dual-core, 1.33GHz Core i3-380UM, or a dual-core, 1.33GHz i5-470UM (with 1.86GHz TurboBoost frequency).

All with 18-Watt TDPs, these CPUs operate with Intel's HM55 Express chipset and provide integrated graphics. However, Gigabyte is also providing T1125 purchasers with optional discrete Nvidia GeForce 330M graphics, with 512MB of dedicated memory and compatibility with the Optimus auto-switching technology.

According to Gigabyte, the T1125 has an 11.6-inch capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. As on the earlier models mentioned, this pivots around on its hinge (right) to turn the notebook into a tablet device.

Gigabyte claims the T1125's keyboard has a large key pitch that "is very comfortable even for male adults," and a 3.7-pound weight "for ladies who prefer lightweight laptops." The device is offered with either four-cell or six-cell batteries, the company adds.

The dual-core processors are teamed with 2GB or 4GB of DDR3 memory in standard configurations that are said to be expandable up to 8GB. Hard disk drives, meanwhile, spin at 5400rpm and come in 320GB or 500GB capacities, according to Gigabyte.

Featuring 802.11b/g/n wireless networking and Bluetooth 2.1, the T1125 also comes with a gigabit Ethernet port, an HDMI output, an eSATA/USB combo port, and two additional USB ports (one of these may optionally be USB 3.0 instead of the standard USB 2.0), says Gigabyte. The netbook further includes a 1.3 megapixel webcam, a VGA output, a microphone input, a headphone output, and a four-in-one card reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS Pro), the company adds.

According to Gigabyte, the T1125 offers a docking port that lets it slot into the optional docking station pictured at right. This accessory provides a DVD drive, duplicate USB and video outputs, and allows the notebook's screen to be employed as a secondary display, the company says.
