Tiger Telematics confirmed today that it's on schedule for the Oct. 22nd US launch of its Windows CE-powered Gizmondo handheld multifunction entertainment console. The basic Gizmondo has a suggested retail price of $229, according to the company.

Also scheduled for release Saturday are North American regional versions of the Gizmondo Navigator 2006 GPS navigation software that was released in Europe and the UK in August. Gizmondo Navigator is based on a customized version of CoPilot, developed by ALK Technologies. It provides detailed 2D and 3D street maps and turn-by-turn voice instructions to a specific house number or point of interest, according to Tiger. Four individual regions -- East Coast, Mid-West, West Coast, and South West -- will be available on SDIO cards, for $169 each. The entire USA is optionally available for $249.

A complete system bundle, including software and a "SmartADDs-enabled" Gizmondo, will be priced at $399, according to the company.

        About the Gizmondo

The pager-sized Gizmondo multifunction device combines 3D gaming, multimedia messaging, MP3 music, MPEG4 movie playing, a digital camera, a GPS receiver, Bluetooth wireless, and GPRS cellular communications. The device uses its GPRS and Bluetooth wireless communications interfaces for multi-player gaming. It runs Windows CE on a 400 MHz Hitachi ARM9 processor coupled with an Nvidia 3-D multimedia graphics accelerator.

Gizmondo won an award for "Design Solution of the Year" last fall in London, shortly before its retail roll-out in Europe and was a major attraction at this spring's Electronic Entertainment Expo. Much of the device's software was developed by Intrinsyc Software based on its wireless telephony suite.
