Gizmondo Europe announced a "street date" of August 11 for North American availability of its Gizmondo multi-entertainment handheld game console, today at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles. The Windows CE powered device has generated considerable buzz since its November 2003

Gizmondo also used the E3 venue to unveil two new gaming features -- "Augmented Reality" and "Gyroscopic Camera Technology" -- along with a line up of GPS-enabled games exclusive to the device.

Gyroscopic Camera Technology uses movement detected through the digital camera at the rear of the device as a direct analog control input for games. This feature is said to be useful in a wide variety of games, and is currently being integrated into several exclusive titles by Gizmondo Studios.

Augmented Reality also uses the digital camera, but in a "radically different" way. By viewing specially designed graphics and symbols through the camera mode, a "three-dimensional and animated character or object can be introduced to the 'real world' environment with stunning effect," the company says.

Both new technologies are being built into a GPS-enabled adventure game called Agaju, which is being demonstrated "behind closed doors" at E3, according to Gizmondo.

        About the Gizmondo

The Gizmondo is described as a multifunction entertainment device incorporating GPRS wireless communications, an MPEG4 decoder, a digital camera, and GPS, among other features. It runs Windows CE on a 400 MHz Hitachi ARM9 processor coupled with an Nvidia 3-D multimedia graphics accelerator. The device won an award for "Design Solution of the Year" last fall in London, shortly before its retail roll-out in Europe.
