The Windows CE based Gizmondo mobile gaming device has won the "Design Solution of the Year Award" at the Electronics Industry Design Awards in London, a competition claimed to be the "ultimate industry accolade" in the British electronics market.

The awards aim to recognize companies and individuals showing strong achievements in innovation, efficiency, and best practice.

Gizmondo boasts a 2.8-inch TFT color screen and is powered by an 400MHz ARM9 applications processor along with a 128-bit Nvidia graphics accelerator. The interactive, pager-sized gadget provides "cutting-edge gaming", multimedia messaging, an MP3 music player, MPEG 4 movie playing capability, a digital camera and a GPRS network link to allow wide-area network gaming, according to the company. Additionally, it contains a GPS chip that enables location-based services, is equipped with Bluetooth for use in multi-player gaming, and accepts MMC card accessories.

Gizmondo is scheduled for launch in the UK later this month (Oct. 29) along with a variety of content including games with GPS functionality that incorporate a player's physical location into the game itself.
