AT&T has announced a "world" version of a phone first introduced in May. The Motorola Q Global is said to be the first device in the Q series to support both U.S. operation and international roaming.

The Q Global is fundamentally the same as Motorola's Q 9h, introduced to international markets in May. However, in addition to the Q 9h's GSM/GPRS/EDGE quad-band capabilities, the Q Global adds dual-band UMTS/HSDPA, for U.S. operation.

AT&T claims that the Q Global can be used in more than 135 countries for email and Internet access, and in more than 190 countries to make or receive phone calls. Potential download speeds are said to be up to 3.6 Mbps on AT&T's UMTS/HSDPA BroadbandConnect network, available in "more than 200 major metropolitan areas in the U.S."

The Q Global features Windows Mobile 6.0, with Direct Push Technology for up-to-date email delivery and automatic Outlook synchronization. According to AT&T, the device is also compatible with Microsoft's forthcoming System Center Mobile Device Manager.

Software addons include the Opera Mobile Web browser, and Documents to Go, which makes Office documents editable despite the phone's use of Windows Mobile Standard edition. Also featured is mobile messaging software from Motorola division Good Technology (more about this below).

Like the Q 9h before it, the Q Global comes with built-in GPS, a 2.4-inch display, and a 2 megapixel camera with built-in flash. TeleNav GPS Navigator is said to provide turn-by-turn directions via voice or on screen, plus restaurant reviews and ratings and a feature allowing users to share their current location with others.

As with other carriers, AT&T is for some reason coy about the Q Global's processor and RAM complement. If these are the same as the Q 9h, a TI OMAP 2420 is employed, backed by 96 MB of RAM and 256 MB of flash.

Hardware features and specifications listed by AT&T and Motorola include:
        • 2.4-inch QVGA (320x240 pixels) LCD display
        • QWERTY keyboard
        • Communications:
          • GSM/GPRS/EDGE quad-band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), capable of global roaming
          • UMTS/HSDPA (850/1900 MHz)
        • I/O:
          • Bluetooth Class 2 (A2DP, AVRCP - stereo)
          • USB 2.0 full-speed transfers and data access
        • Multimedia support:
          • Audio -- AMR NB, AMR WB, MWA, MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, WAV, and MIDI
          • Video -- H.263, MPEG4, WMV, and H.264 decode
        • Camera:
          • 2.0 megapixel camera with zoom
          • Video capture at 15 fps, playback at 30 fps
        • Expansion -- microSD slot supports up to 2 GB removable storage
        • Size -- 11.8mm thick
According to Motorola, the included Good Mobile Messaging software has been optimized for the Q Global, offering a sophisticated email client, calendaring, and an RSS reader. Beyond that, the device is said to offer OTA (over-the-air) application deployment and management, along with remote administration of the phone's components and emergency data wiping.

AT&T says the Q Global is available now for approximately $200, with a mandatory service contract. The Telenav GPS Navigator service costs from $6 to $10 extra per month.
