        HP plans messaging-oriented Windows phone

HP is preparing to launch a messaging-oriented Windows Mobile phone with a QWERTY keyboard, GPS, WiFi, and a 2.4-inch OLED (organic light emitting diode display). The iPAQ K3, code-named "Obsidian," will be offered in the U.S. by AT&T, according to several reports.

The iPAQ K3 could be a significant product for HP because recent entries in the once-prominent iPAQ product line, such as last year's iPAQ Voice Messenger, iPAQ Data Messenger, and iPAQ 900 Series Business Messenger have not, as far as we're aware, been picked up by any U.S. carriers. The messaging-oriented K3, on the other hand, will be offered by AT&T this autumn, according to several different reports.

Word of the K3 first came last May from the Engadget website, which offered details of the phone as part of a treasure trove of purportedly leaked AT&T documents. According to information published then, the device will be released by AT&T this November, naturally supporting the carrier's GSM network. The K3 will offer quad-band (850/900/1800/1900MHz) GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band (850/1900/2100MHz) HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access), according to Engadget.

Now, photographs of the K3 have emerged from Hanoi, of all places, offered by the Vietnamese Sohoa website. The apparently genuine images confirm the K3's OLED screen, its QWERTY keyboard, its use of Windows Mobile 6.5, and even its AT&T badging.

Specifications discussed by Sohoa match those previously disclosed by Engadget, except that the screen size is now listed as 2.4 inches instead of 2.8 inches. Both websites agree that the K3 will offer 320 x 240 resolution, a two megapixel camera, a 528MHz Qualcomm MSM7200A processor, GPS, WiFI, and Bluetooth 2.0.

Features and specifications for HP's K3 "Obsidian," provided by Engadget and updated by Sohoa include the following:

        • Processor -- Qualcomm MSM7200A clocked at 528MHz
        • Memory -- n/s
        • Display -- 2.4-inch OLED touchscreen with 320 x 240 resolution
