Another touted new feature of the devices is HP's "scratch-resistant" DuraFinish.
The t5540 and t5630 use an identical hardware platform, featuring a 1.0GHz
Via Eden CPU. This processor has a 5W TDP (thermal design power), and it's likely paired here with Via's
CX700M integrated northbridge/southbridge, though HP did not specify.
The Windows CE-based t5540 comes with 512MB of DDR2 RAM and 128MB of flash storage. Meanwhile, the t5630 runs XPe, has 1GB of DDR2 RAM, and offers 1GB of flash storage. On both devices, 64MB of system memory is reserved for video usage, according to the company.
The devices measure 8.65 x 8.5 x 2.05 inches, and sport both VGA and DVI-D video outputs. They include six USB ports -- two on the front, two on the rear, and two in a "secure compartment." Connectivity is via a gigabit Ethernet interface, with RJ45 connector, says HP.
The t5540 and t5630 include two PS/2 ports apiece, for legacy keyboards and mice, plus serial and parallel ports. They have microphone inputs and headphone outputs on their front panels, too.
HP says the t5540's Windows CE 6.0 installation allows it to be configured "with the familiar Windows interface, or [as a] simple locked-down appliance." The device includes Altiris Deployment Solution and HP Device Manager software, according to the company. In addition, HP's ThinState Tools software is said to allow deploying clients simply by copying settings from a "master" device, without installing new deployment/management servers.
The t5630 again includes Altiris Deployment Solution and HP Device Manager software, and adds Symantec's Endpoint Protection software to the mix, says HP. Also touted is the device's use of Microsoft's
Enhanced Write Filter, which makes the operating system inherently resistant to malware or other unauthorized modifications, since it reboots to a pristine state.

Two other newly announced thin clients from HP use the same form factor as the above devices, but cut the Via Eden's clock speed to 500MHz. Known as the t5145 and t5545, they use HP's ThinConnect and ThinPro operating systems, respectively.
