Both the mp8000s and mp8000r are said to employ Intel's 3.0GHz Core 2 Duo 8400 processor and the Q45 Express chipset. The mp8000s (above) is a smaller box, however, which can mount on the back of various HP displays. The mp8000r, meanwhile, has a desktop-specific form factor, offering additional storage and expansion.
According to HP, the mp8000s has 2GB of RAM, two SODIMM slots, and a 1.60GB, 2.5-inch hard disk drive. It also features a 5.25-inch optical disk drive -- pictured but not detailed by the company, this is apparently offered in both DVD RW and Blu-ray versions -- and a single Mini PCI Express expansion slot.

The mp8000r (above) has 2GB of RAM, four DIMM slots, and a 320GB, 3.5-inch hard disk drive, says HP. In addition to a 5.25-inch optical drive, it also provides room for an external 3.5-inch drive, while expansion is said to include one low-profile PCI slot, two low-profile PCI Express x1 slots, and one low-profile PCI Express x16 slot.
HP says both mp8000s and mp8000r have a similar lineup of ports, including, on the front, four USB 2.0 ports and audio I/O (mic in and headphone out), and, on the rear, six USB 2.0 ports, PS/2 ports, more audio I/O (line in and line out), and gigabit Ethernet ports. Both are also said to provide VGA and DisplayPort outputs, while the larger mp8000r also delivers a serial port (plus the option of a second serial port and a parallel port).
The mp8000r offers 802.11b/g/n wireless networking, while the mp8000s has 802.11a/b/g/n wireless, says HP. The mp8000r adds discrete graphics too, specifically Nvidia's GeForce 310, though no word was provided on whether this circuitry occupies one of the device's expansion slots.
According to HP, the mp8000s and mp8000r both include TPMs (trusted platform modules), case locks, plus ACPI (advanced configuration and power management interface) compatibility. The mp8000s has a 135-Watt power supply, while the mp8000r has a 240-Watt supply, says the company.

According to HP, the mp8000s and mp8000r are both provided with Scala QuickStart digital signage deployment software, which "makes creating professional images quick and easy." QuickStart is further described as a hosted version of Scala's Content Manager software, with a simplified graphical user interface that's accessible via any Internet-connected device.
Scala says QuickStart offers scheduling of content to any single-output player devices, providing support for RSS, metadata, message templates, and approval. Content types supported include video, images, Flash, interactive content, and Scala scripts.

According to Scala, it takes care of all back-end server work, including implementation, setup, monitoring, updates, backups, hardware maintenance, and system recovery. Customers may later upgrade to the full Scala Content Manager platform without losing any data, content, or customizations, the company adds.
Gerard Bucas, CEO of Scala, stated, "Never before has setting up a full-featured digital signage player been this easy. We're incredibly pleased to introduce this new service in conjunction with the new Scala certified players from HP. We believe we have achieved a significant breakthrough for the industry."
