Hot on the heels of the official release of Windows Mobile 6, Hewlett-Packard announced its first smartphone running the new platform.

The quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE iPAQ 500 series Voice Messenger features hands-free operation with more than 20 voice commands, according to the company.

With its built-in WiFi and VoIP (voice over Internet protocol) capabilities, the Voice Messenger presents an interesting alternative to traditional office phone setups. HP suggests that by integrating the device with office phone systems, businesses can eliminate the need for desk phones and benefit from streamlined communications and reduced IT management.

The company lists the following key features and specifications for the iPAQ 500 series Voice Messenger:
        • Processor -- TI OMAP 850, clocked at 200 MHz
        • Memory -- 64 MB SDRAM; 128 MB flash
        • Display -- 2-inch, 176x220 pixel "micro-reflective" TFT, with LED backlight
        • I/O ports:
          • USB 1.1 client

        • Power -- rechargeable 1100 mAh Lithium-lon user changeable battery

          • standby time -- up to 7.8 days

HP says the Voice Messenger is the first iPAQ device to offer the over-the-air device management capabilities that HP acquired with its purchase of Bitfone Corp. These capabilities allow IT managers to configure and repair units, provide updates and security applications, and remotely erase data on lost or misplaced devices, according to the company.

The iPAQ 500 series Voice Messenger is expected to be available this spring in the U.S., direct from HP and select authorized dealers. Pricing was not disclosed.
