HP thin client supports four displays

HP has announced a thin client device that will run Microsoft's new Embedded Standard 2009 operating system. Targeting dispatch centers, financial trading, and CAD (computer aided design) applications, the "gt7725" has a 2.3GHz dual-core AMD Turion processor, according to the company.

HP says the new gt7725 is the most powerful offering in its thin client portfolio. The device uses the 2.3GHz, dual-core AMD Turion processor, the company says.

Subsequent to yesterday's announcement, HP was apparently in the process of updating its web page devoted to the gt7725. The site, for example, erroneously lists a 1.0GHz Via C7 as the product's CPU, and provides a different product picture than the one accompanying the press release (shown above and below). We're not confident, therefore, of the device's actual memory complement or dimensions, for that matter. However, the cited 2GB of DDR2 RAM and 1GB of flash storage may well be accurate.

In any case, the device is confirmed as having graphics courtesy of the AMD RS780G chipset (also branded as the ATI Radeon HD3200). Its dual DVI outputs support resolutions of up to 2560 x 1600 pixels on each of two displays, or 1900 x 1200 pixels on each of four displays, in portrait or landscape configurations, according to HP.

In addition to dual DVI ports, the gt7725's rear panel includes four USB ports, a gigabit Ethernet port, two PS/2 ports, plus jacks for a microphone input and headphone output, says HP. Cited software support includes Citrix ICA (independent computing architecture), RDP (remote desktop protocol) and the TeemTalk terminal emulator, the company adds.

The gt7725 appears to be the first thin client device to be announced with Microsoft's new Windows Embedded Standard 2009 (WES), which was released to product manufacturers just last week. However, concedes HP, the device will be "initially available with HP ThinPro," a Linux-based client operating system, and may not ship with WES until "the coming year."

Raj Dhingra, group vice president and general manager for Citrix's desktop delivery group, says "HP's new gt7725 can integrate with client virtualization to offer a high-performance graphics experience to demanding power users."

Features and specifications listed by HP for its gt7225 thin client include:
        • Processor -- AMD Turion clocked at 2.3GHz
        • Memory -- 2GB of RAM and 1GB of flash storage (may be subject to change)
        • Display -- Supports two 2560 x 1600 pixel DVI-interfaced displays, or up to four 1900 x 1200 displays
