HTC fields Windows Phone 7 device with QWERTY keyboard

HTC will launch a Windows Phone 7 device with a slide-out, landscape mode QWERTY keyboard, according to a product listing by O2. The HTC 7 Pro will be available in January with a 3.6-inch screen, a five-megapixel camera, and 8GB of internal storage, the German carrier says.

HTC's 7 Pro will be the second Windows Phone 7 device to offer a hardware QWERTY keyboard, a feature that's often sought by enterprise customers. The first was Dell's Venue Pro (right), a T-Mobile-offered phone whose manufacturer has struggled to keep up with demand.

The product listing by O2, Telefonica's German division, lists only a few technical details: a 3.6-inch touchscreen with 800 x 480 pixels; a five megapixel camera; 8GB of storage; and an slide-out QWERTY keyboard. This is more than enough to provide a full picture, however, because the device is certain to feature the same 1GHz "Scorpion" application processor as the other Windows Phone 7 devices launched to date.

Initially released Windows Phones all use Qualcomm QSD8250 or 8650 chipsets, Microsoft having mandated the use of these in order to get its revamped mobile operating system out more quickly. Both include the Scorpion application processors, but the QSD8250 supports only GSM, GPRS, EDGE and HSPA networks, whereas the QSD8650 supports both these and CDMA2000 1X, 1xEV-DO 0/A/B networks, according to the chipmaker.

The first batch of Windows Phone 7 handsets were all GSM devices, and O2 is a GSM provider, meaning that the initial HTC HD7 Pro will be no different in that regard. Microsoft has said CDMA Windows Phones for carriers such as Sprint and Verizon will be available in early 2011.
