ATandT launches Windows Phone 7 flagship

AT&T announced a Windows Phone 7 handset with a 4.3-inch "Super LCD" display, a kickstand, and Dolby Mobile sound. The HTC HD7S will include a 1GHz processor, five megapixel camera, 16GB of flash storage, and Microsoft's copy-and-paste-enabled operating system upgrade, the company says.

Presumably planned before AT&T's newly announced plans to acquire T-Mobile, the HTC-manufactured HD7S is a revised version of the HD7 the latter carrier launched last fall. Now with the AT&T imprimatur (below), the phone still has the 4.3-inch screen that made it the largest of any Windows Phone 7 device, but -- hinting at an upgrade from the original 800 x 480 pixel resolution -- the carrier refers to it as "the first HD7 in the U.S. with a super LCD display."

Like the previous T-Mobile version, the HD7S has a kickstand that can prop it up for movie viewing, Dolby Mobile-branded audio, a five gigapixel camera, GPS, and 16GB of internal flash storage. And, like other first-generation Windows Phone 7 devices, the HD7S is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm processor.

Apart from the screen, the only difference from the HD7 cited by AT&T is that the HD7S will come with a preloaded U-verse Mobile application. This will allow customers of AT&T's U-verse TV/Internet/phone service to download and watch "hit TV shows" for free, while those aren't U-verse subscribers will be able to add the TV downloads to their calling plan for $10 per month, the carrier says.

According to AT&T, the HD7S will also arrive with Microsoft's "NoDo" Windows Phone 7 update already installed. This means that, unlike the first wave of Windows Phones, the device will provide copy-and-paste functionality, and faster application loading has also been promised.
