The world's leading manufacturer of Windows Mobile devices, HTC normally operates behind the scenes as an ODM (original design manufacturer), building
a broad range of devices for wireless carriers such as T-Mobile and Verizon, and for OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) such as Hewlett-Packard and Dell. The company also sells its phones directly under the Qtek brand, but will now be migrating those products to the HTC label in order "to provide better direct support" to its customers, it said.
This week's announcement follows close on the heels of news that HTC
would acquire the popular Asian phone brand, Dopod.
Perhaps to ease the mind of its OEM and carrier partners, HTC was careful to point out that it "will continue to support its operator-branded products and OEM partners as a key priority. At the same time, HTC will provide its new branded products to its existing Qtek channels, distributors, enterprise, and operators, who do not carry operator-branded products."
HTC, widely thought to be the ODM source of some 80 percent of the world's Windows Mobile smartphones and PDA-phones, reported on May 10 that its total revenues for April 2006 reached NT$7,596 million (approx. US$237 million), up 48.59 percent year-over-year, and that its total 2006 year-to-date revenues were NT$31,608 million (approx. US$986 million), up 72.14 percent over the same period of 2005.
