Labcal, headquartered in Quebec, has launched a line of handheld biometrics readers for identifying people and authenticating documents. The Be.U Mobile, running Windows CE 5.0, is a ruggedized device that enables mobile ID verification in harsh environments and extreme temperatures, according to the company.

The Be.U Mobile reader performs 1:1 matching of fingerprints with ID documents using either contact or contactless smart cards. It can also perform 1:N matching by storing the fingerprint templates and the credentials in the reader or on a server, according to Labcal. The reader communicates wirelessly with the server via Wi-Fi, GSM, or CDMA.

The Be.U Mobile is based on an Intel PXA270 processor with 128 MB of RAM and 32 MB of Flash. Its display is a 3.5-inch QVGA TFT touchscreen LCD with 16-bit color. Built-in 802.11b WiFi wireless is standard and GSM and CDMA cellular are available as options. Future versions of the reader are expected to include a camera in order to allow reading of 1D and 2D bar codes, as well as facial and iris recognition, according to the company.

Labcal calls the device "algorithm agnostic," saying it can be used with existing automatic fingerprint identification systems. The company provides an SDK (software development kit) for custom application development.
