Exfo Electro-Optical Engineering has introduced a handheld test platform for multi-technology, multi-application characterization of metro/access and FTTx (fiber-to-the-X) networks. The FTB-200 accommodates up to two field-interchangeable modules that are compatible with the company's FTB-100 and FTB-400 platform series. Test modules include a wide range of singlemode and multimode optical time-domain reflectometers (OTDRs), automated optical loss test sets (OLTSs), legacy and next-generation SONET/SDH analyzers from DS0 up to OC-192, as well as Gigabit Ethernet testers.

The unit sports a 6.4-inch color VGA (640 x 480) touchscreen coupled with a dial and "shortkeys" for easy scrolling and selecting. Expansion ports and capabilities include:
        • USB A main
        • USB B remote
        • 10/100 Ethernet, RJ45
        • CompactFlash
        • Fiber inspection probe connector port (video)

        At 12.69 x 7.75 x 4.31 inches, "handheld" means both hands

The FTB-200 also offers a built-in power meter. Optional features include a visual fault locator (VFL), fiber-inspection probe and portable Bluetooth printer. Bluetooth is supported through a CF card.

"We have designed the first truly compact platform for the supertech," says Exfo VP Etienne Gagnon. "Whether testing triple-wavelength insertion loss at the central office or data integrity of an IP-based network in the core, the FTB-200 Compact Platform is the solution of choice for this new breed of field technician."
