Phatware has released a new beta version of its handwriting recognition software for Windows Mobile devices. Calligrapher 8.0 features a new data input method, improved recognition algorithms, and support for Windows Mobile 5.0, according to the company.

Calligrapher 8.0 now supports two input methods. The original "Write Anywhere" method analyzes pen strokes written in any application window, converts the pen strokes to text and automatically sends the recognized text to the target application.

The new "Write Pad" method is a Soft Input Panel (SIP) presented at the bottom of the screen, which looks like a sheet of yellow notepad paper. Text written in this panel is recognized and appears at the top of the panel. The result can be sent to the currently active application by tapping the Enter button to the right of the result. CalliGrapher 8.0 also provides improved handwriting recognition, employing advanced fuzzy logic and neural net techniques to recognize cursive, print, or mixed handwriting, according to Phatware. Other new features include an attachable and floating keyboard, extended toolbar and Write Pad that occupies the entire width of the screen in landscape mode, and a new color picker to select ink and pad colors.

In addition to English handwriting support, CalliGrapher offers optional language packs for 11 foreign languages.

CalliGrapher 8.0 supports devices running Windows Mobile 2003 or later software. The beta download is available here. The company says it expects to release the final version in the third quarter.
