PhatWare has updated its handwriting recognition software for Windows Mobile devices. CalliGrapher 8.2 is now optimized for use on square screen devices, such as the Windows Mobile-based Palm Treo 700w smartphone, as well as full VGA resolution devices, according to the company.

CalliGrapher analyzes pen strokes written in any application window or in the designated Write Pad area, then converts those pen strokes into text and sends the recognized text to the target application. The package employs advanced fuzzy logic and neural net techniques to recognize arbitrary alphanumeric strings as well as words contained in its integrated dictionary, according to PhatWare.

In addition to English handwriting support, CalliGrapher offers optional language packs for 11 foreign languages.

PhatWare cites additional upgrades in version 8.2 that include an improved algorithm for CalliGrapher Statistical Analyzer, which allows CalliGrapher to learn the user's writing habits and automatically fix common recognition errors based on the user's writing patterns.

CalliGrapher supports ARM and XScale devices running Windows Mobile 2003 or later, up through Windows Mobile 5.0. The product is currently priced at $39.95.
