Symbol Technologies has tapped Avaya to provide Internet protocol (IP) "softphone" support for its MC50 rugged Windows mobile handheld. The combination is aimed at environments where mobile workers need to combine handheld computers and scanners along with real-time voice communications.

Avaya says its IP Softphone implements a "virtual representation" of a desktop phone that runs on a PC, laptop, or PDA. It provides access to real-time voice communications and the features of Avaya Communication Manager such as managing multiple call appearances, transfer, conference, and over 120 other end user capabilities, according to the company.

"The joint solution is designed to improve organizational productivity by giving workers a wireless mobile computer that delivers advanced levels of voice quality, and can perform many activities that would otherwise require the use of several devices," the companies said, in a joint statement.

The use of Avaya IP Softphone on the MC50 is supported by Symbol's WS5100 wireless switch and AP300 Access Port, which, according to Symbol, provide preemptive roaming and data load balancing functions that result in a "walk while you work" experience.

The combined package "extends desktop phone functionality to mobile professionals roaming throughout the enterprise, empowering them to be more productive," said Pat McCullough, vice president of Symbol's Solutions Division.

This is at least the second VoIP software suite that's been ported to the MC50. Nearly a year ago, Telesym announced that its SymPhone, a "third generation" mobile IP telephony package was available on the MC50.
