Lagotek has released added Windows Vista support to its wireless home automation software. Version 3.0 of the company's Home Intelligence Platform (HIP) is said to provide full home and media center control from WiFi-enabled PDAs, and from remote control devices that support Windows Vista Sideshow.

Integration with Windows Vista Media Center allows users to control home systems using a standard remote control to select a user-defined "Mode" on the media center screen. A Mode exercises control over multiple devices -- such as lights, climate, audio, and video -- via a single click of the remote, according to Lagotek. Media Center states are now exposed to Lagotek's "Rules Application" so that, for example, the lights dim down when a movie starts, and dim up when the movie is paused or stopped.

According to Microsoft, the Windows SideShow platform is a feature of Vista that lets developers create or extend applications specifically for devices with small displays and limited interaction models. Applications designed to work with the platform are referred to as "gadgets."

With a SideShow enabled Media Center remote control, Lagotek says its Modes gadget will display all Modes on the remote's screen, eliminating the need to turn the TV on just to control a few lights.

Based on "overwhelming customer demand," according to Lagotek, version 3.0 of the HIP now also supports whole-home control from a WiFi-enabled PDA running Windows CE 5.0.

Lagotek president Ron Risdon stated, "These new features give our customers the flexibility to control their homes and entertainment from pretty much any device they want. We worked very closely with Microsoft in developing version 3.0. Our system uses the great features of Windows Vista Media Center and Ultimate Edition. Combining fun with professional functionality makes it an ideal platform for Home Automation."

The Windows CE 5.0-based HIP is described as a wireless home automation system that enables simplified control of lighting, climate, security, entertainment, video surveillance, irrigation, and other residential applications. The device integrates easily with third-party data acquisition and control products, according to the company. To learn more about the HIP, see our earlier coverage, here.
