Microsoft embedded product manager Mike Hall has published a video detailing the steps required to build and test headless operating system images using the Windows CE 5.0 Platform Builder. A headless device has no user interface components or peripherals, and must be accessed remotely via a network or serial connection.

The 10-minute video shows how a simple web server can be built with little more than drag-and-drop operations in Platform Builder. Hall shows how standard network utilities such as ipconfig and ping can be used to configure and exercise the device.

Hall says he already has a "sequel" planned. The new video, expected early in the new year, will show how to add Telnet support to a headless device, he adds.
