Without citing what processor the device is based on, HumanWare says the BrailleNote Apex includes Windows CE 6.0, 256MB of memory, and 8GB of flash memory. While it includes a VGA output for an optional "plug and play visual display," the portable unit is primarily intended to provide feedback to the user via its integral, 32-cell Braille display, according to the company.
The BrailleNote Apex (right) is also said to include text-to-speech capabilities. Users can obtain books from Audible, Bookshare, RFB&D, and "numerous other sources," then have them read out verbally or rendered in Braille. Microsoft word and other text documents may be converted, printed, embossed, or attached to e-mail, the company adds.
According to HumanWare, the BrailleNote Apex is operable either via an eight-dot Braille keyboard, as pictured above, or an optional computer-style keyboard. Either way, the device has netbook-like weight (1.98 pounds) and dimensions (9.84 x 5.51 x .78 inches). A rechargeable, lithium-ion battery is also featured, though the company did not say how long it lasts.
HumanWare says the Apex includes a KeySoft applications suite that provides a web browser, email software, Internet radio playback, and the ability to browse a local area network and retrieve files. The device's scroll wheel and "signature thumb keys" make it easy to navigate documents and access any desired feature instantly, the company claims.
The BrailleNote Apex includes three USB 2.0 host ports, plus one USB 2.0 client port intended for Braille terminal mode or ActiveSync, the company says. The device also offers an Ethernet port, 802.11b/g wireless networking, and Bluetooth 2.1, HumanWare adds.
Gilles Pepin, CEO of HumanWare, stated, "As a proud supporter of Braille literacy, HumanWare is committed to developing products that help blind people to fully participate in the quickly evolving, digital world around them. Because we believe that communication is the key to success, we strive to put every opportunity in the hands of our customers with Braille products that meet their needs every day. The BrailleNote Apex puts the power of digital communication at everyone's fingertips."
