IEI Technology announced a Windows-based access control terminal that includes an eight-inch touchscreen display. The ACT-408A includes relays for door locking/unlocking and alarms, has an EM/Mifare RFID reader, and includes a Weigand 26 bus interface for connecting a slave access controller, the company says.

IEI says its special-purpose panel PC employs the popular Intel Atom N270 CPU, along with the usual 945GSE northbridge and ICH7M southbridge, and accepts 1GB or 2GB of RAM via a single DIMM slot. Mass storage is provided via a CompactFlash card, and the device is supplied with a 1GB Windows XP Embedded image or a 128MB Windows CE image, according to the company.

The ACT-408A includes an eight-inch resistive touchscreen with a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels, a 500:1 contrast ratio, and a 250-nit brightness rating. Although this display may be used to show advertising and other information, its primary purpose is to act as a numeric keypad and facilitate user entry to a door, elevator, or other secure area, notes IEI.

        IEI's ACT-408A

IEI suggests that the ACT-408A, whose front bezel meets IP64 standards for weather resistance, can be placed outside a door to attract people's attention, and to display their identities once they have been scanned. The device includes an RFID reader that is compatible with 125KHz EM and 13.56MHz Mifare tags, and it also includes a VGA-resolution camera and microphones that may be used in face and voice recognition applications, the company says.

Further suggested as an adjunct to the system is an industry standard slave card reader/numeric keypad, which would be placed on the inside of the door to swipe cards as people leave. The bottom of the ACT-408A (pictured below) has an eight-pin terminal block for connecting such a Wiegand reader, providing five I/Os, a 5/12VDC power supply, and two ground connections.

Also on the bottom of the device are two USB 2.0 ports, one RS232 port, one RS232/422/485 port, and a 12VDC power input. On top, meanwhile, there's a gigabit Ethernet port, while a third USB 2.0 port is located on the front of the ACT-408A.

According to IEI, the ACT-408A has a four-pin terminal block for signal inputs (door sensor, tamper sensor, exit button, and ground) and an eight-pin block for outputs (12VDC, ground, three lock relays, and three alarm relays). Thanks to built-in anti-tampering functionality, an alarm will sound if either the ACT-408A or a connected slave reader is destroyed, the company says.

Features and specifications listed by IEI Technology for the ACT-408A include:
