IEI Technology announced a Windows CE-based panel PC that sports a capacitive, multi-touch display. The IOVU-430M has a 4.3-inch screen with 480 x 272 resolution, 802.11b/g wireless networking, plus a CAN bus interface and six GPIOs, the company says.

Targeting industrial control applications, IEI's IOVU-430M is the first Windows CE device we've come across with a capacitive multi-touch display (a resistive, single-touch version of the product is also available). While the panel PC is said to ship with a SDK (software development kit), utilities, and technical documentation, IEI provides no word on what user interface has been added to its Windows CE 5.0 operating system. However, finger-operated zooming is said to be possible, as illustrated in the image below.

According to IEI, the IOVU-430M has a 4.3-inch screen with a resolution of 480 x 272 pixels and a 400-nit brightness rating. The device uses a Marvell PXA270 processor clocked at 416MHz, while its operating system is stored on a 1GB miniSD card that is bundled with the system, the company adds.

Designed for wall, stand, or arm mounting, the IOVU-430M has a front panel that is IP65-rated for resistance to dust and liquids, IEI says. Interfaces are said to include 10/100 Ethernet, CAN bus, a RS232/422/485 serial port, six GPIOs, and a USB 1.1 host.

And so, multi-touch makes its way from the iPhone to the world of industrial automation ...
IEI says the IOVU-430M includes stereo speakers with 1.5 Watts of amplification per channel, and can play back MPEG-1 video. Wireless networking (802.11b/g) is also on board, according to the company.

The IOVU-430M can operate on DC power ranging from 12 to 36 Volts, and uses just 7 Watts, according to IEI. Operating range is said to be from -4 to 140 deg. F (-20 to 60 deg. C).
