Including DRM in Windows CE based devices

A brief article at Microsoft's Windows Embedded Developer Center explains how to incorporate Digital Rights Management (DRM) into portable devices running Windows CE. DRM technology protects digital content by encrypting it and attaching it to usage rules that determine the conditions under which a user can play back the content.

Usage rules typically prevent copying or limit the number of times the content will play. The operating system works with the multimedia middleware to enforce these rules.

The article is primarily concerned with the issues of copying protected content to a portable device. This involves, among other things, managing licenses between the portable device and a desktop server through ActiveSync.

To maintain the integrity of DRM, Platform Builder does not allow kernel debugging when DRM components are present on a platform, according to the article. Consequently, the article recommends that DRM be integrated as late as possible in the development cycle.
