SCADA software set for major upgrade

InduSoft has reportedly announced a "major update" to its HMI (human machine interface) and SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) software for Windows. Web Studio version 7.0 will be available in the third quarter, offering greater ease of use, a modernized look and feel, and compatibility with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, according to the Consulting-Specifying Engineer website.

The Web Studio upgrade has not yet been announced by Austin, Texas-based InduSoft itself, but will be further publicized shortly, or so the Consulting-Specifying item implies. According to the publication, Web Studio 7.0 is a "major update" that brings a modern look-and-feel to the software, reduces the number of steps for many actions, and increases ease of use.

It's said version 7.0 is now compatible with Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 (both 32 and 64-bit), including the new "jump list" feature in Windows 7. This is in addition to continued support for a multitude of other Microsoft operating systems, including Windows CE, Windows Mobile, Windows XP Embedded, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003, Consulting-Specifying says.

InduSoft version 7.0 will reportedly include new or updated drivers for Eaton ELC, Siemens, Opto 22, CAN, and BACnet. That would be in addition to OPC support and the more than 200 drivers that were previously included.

Web Studio's previous upgrade to InduSoft was version 6.1, Service Pack 6, announced in January. That version, too, was touted as providing Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 compatibility, but apparently did not include the new drivers and user interface upgrades that will be included in 7.0.

WebStudio, pictured earlier in this story in its current version, has been on the market since 1997, and more than 125,000 licenses have been issued, says InduSoft. Features are said to include:

        • Viewing processes from a desktop or web-enabled mobile phone using a standard browser
        • Creatiing HMIs and SCADA systems in multiple languages via Unicode
        • Developing once and deploying on any supported Microsoft platform
        • Tying into ERP and "back-office" systems using built-in relational database connectivity
        • Using ActiveX or .NET to visualize documentation
