Beckhoff, a German industrial automation equipment supplier, recently integrated embedded PCs into its line of industrial display devices. The formerly passive displays have thus become independent controllers with integrated intelligence running Windows CE and XP Embedded, the company says.

Whereas Beckhoff's earlier "Control Panel" series of displays had to be controlled by an Industrial PC and could only serve as screen and keyboard replacements, the new "Ethernet Panel" products integrate the industrial PC functionality directly within the panels, and use Ethernet to communicate with PLCs (programmable logic controllers) and other factory floor devices. Despite the added built-in intelligence, the Ethernet Panels have the same exterior dimensions as the Control Panels, according to the company.

The displays are available with screen sizes of 6.5, 10, 12, and 15 inches. The anodized metal housing is cut from solid aluminium and has a depth of just 3 cm, and the panels are optionally available with protection class ratings of IP 65 (front) / IP 20 (rear) or completely IP 65.

        Other features and specifications include:
        • Processor -- 266MHz Pentium-compatible processor
        • Memory -- 256MB RAM, 8KB NOVRAM (non-volatile RAM)
        • Storage -- IDE interface for CompactFlash (can be changed externally)
        • Connectivity:
          • 2 10/100 Ethernet
          • 2 USB master ports
          • RS232 (optional)
        • User input options: touchscreen, function keys, numeric or alphanumeric keypad
        • Power -- 24 volt DC
