B & R Industrial Automation recently expanded its line of industrial workstations with the Power Panel 100 series, fanless thin client devices that run Windows CE and offer display sizes ranging from 5.7 to 15 inches.

The Power Panel 100 series thin clients share a common architecture based on a 233MHz Geode SC2200 processor equipped with 16MB of DRAM and 2MB of Flash memory. Additionally, a CompactFlash slot offers convenient and reliable solid-state storage expansion. User input is through an analog resistive touchpanel. The units operate on 24 VDC power.

According to B & R, thin client workstations are an ideal approach when you need to "alternate between using different operating units at different stations." Thin client software is used to manage the connections between the industrial PCs, Power Panel 100 thin clients, and the server. When used in this manner, the thin clients act as pure input/output consoles since the applications actually reside and execute on the server itself.

B & R says its configuration package is able to generate "industrially useful solutions" for both the clients and servers utilizing standard "Remote Desktop Protocol" services. The clients do not require passwords since the preferred client automatically connects to the server upon system startup. The other inactive clients display a simple login screen until the operator opens up the application using the mouse or touch interface.
