        Interview with Microsoft's Linux Lab Manager

        Believe it or not, Microsoft really does have a lab devoted to Linux and Open Source Software. Bill Hilf manages the company's Linux lab and he recently answered a series of questions posted by readers of Slashdot.




        In answer to the first question, Hilf says his job is "to help Microsoft have a clear, unbiased and knowledgeable understanding of Open Source Software," and "no, Microsoft is not out to exterminate Linux or Open Source." When asked if Microsoft could ever match the "freedom" of Open Source, as in freedom to modify and customize the code, Hilf responded that there is "always a balance between the ability to customize anything and everything and the ability to deliver a consistent, tested and supported software solution to a broad base of users."
